Introduction
Throughout
human history masks have been used for a plethora of different
occasions. Ranging from birthday parties to cultural ceremonies and lets
not forget horror movies! Masks do more than unsettle victims and
viewers alike, they often become the signature of an entire franchise.
Today we are going to look at 10 of the scariest horror movie masks, so
lock the door and don't turn the lights out!
1. Michael Myers - Halloween
Who
would of thought a spray painted Captain Kirk mask would be the cause
of so many nightmares? Let's be honest, we all knew a spot on the list
would be dedicated to this classic mask. Since the release of Halloween
in 1978, this mask has become an iconic part of horror movie history.
The face void of emotion is deeply disturbing to say the least. Just one
glance is enough to send shivers down the spine of the toughest cookie!
2. Leatherface - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Personally,
I don't think this masks appearance is frightening. I know what your
thinking, why did I include a mask that isn't scary, in the list. Not so
fast! The scare factor associated with this mask comes from it's
origins... As the movie progresses, you begin to realise that
Leatherface isn't sporting a rubber mask. Rather a mask consisting of
human leather, presumably taken from the bodies of previous victims! Now
if that's not scary enough to make it onto this list, then what is?
3. Ghostface - Scream
In
my opinion this is the scariest mask of all time. Perhaps because I
foolishly decided to watch Scream at a very young age. Nonetheless I am
certain a lot of people would agree, that Ghostface is truly terrifying.
This mask seems somewhat perfect, for a knife-wielding maniac that is
obsessed with horror movies.
4. Purgers Wearing a Mask - The Purge
OK,
technically I'm cheating here as I'm referring to multiple masks.
However, The Purge undoubtedly deserves a spot on this list. The fear
factor here is that these are everyday people, completely transformed
into bloodthirsty murderers once the sirens go off, and the masks go
on... Also, the fact that everyone had their own unique mask, each as
unnerving as the next, is truly frightening.
5. Anonymous - Smiley
When
I first saw this one I was unsure whether it was a mask or not, making
it absolutely horrifying. This mask looks as if somebody has just carved
two vertical slits for eyes, and a smiley face, onto a layer of
featureless skin. The best way to describe this mask is grotesque! A
simple and ingenious design, that will continue to scare for a long time
to come.
6. Damian Elwell - Madison County
When
it comes to horror movies that feature a pig mask, there's a few to
choose from, such as: Saw and Motel Hell. However, none come close to
the one worn by Damian Elwell in Madison County. I find it design more
distinct and more dreadful, than any other pig mask to date.
7. Strangers - The Strangers
There's
not too much to say about these masks. They are simple and appear child
friendly almost harmless. Not very horror movie-esque at all. It's as
if the director just grabbed a bunch of masks at random and rolled with
it, to me that's what makes them creepy. I think it illustrates the
power of using solely a mask as a ploy to scare the viewer brilliantly.
8. Frank - Donnie Darko
I
know, I know Donnie Darko isn't classed as a Horror movie, but just
take a look at that mask! This had to make the list! I find that rabbit
masks make me squirm in my seat at the best of times, then there's the
mask worn by Frank in Donnie Darko. I would say this movie belongs in
the Horror genre based purely on that mask!
9. Hockey Mask - Friday the 13th
This
is the epitome of a mask defining a horror franchise. Seemingly
innocent yet disturbing. People haven't been able to look at a hockey
mask, without associating it with a brutal murder for generations. An
undisputed horror mask legend that could not be left off this list.
10. Clown Mask - IT
Clowns
are unintentionally scary. So I'm pretty certain NOBODY wanted Stephen
King's (the master of horror) interpretation of a clown, to make it onto
the silver screen! The image of Tim Currie's sinister smile is still
burnt into my brain. I literally can't get it out of my head, that's
saying something because my memory is awful!
